Brass and Bronze
- Aluminum Bronze is stronger than most steels and more corrosion
resistant
- Tin Bronzes are self lubricating
- Bronze is beautiful. It is luxurious, luminous and lustrous. We use
the same grades of bronze that were the choice of the world's greatest sculptors.
- Early examples of bronze castings are over 6000 years old.
Read This Before Using Properties and Specifications
- All properties listed are typical or nominal and are not intended as minimum standards. Many design factors can affect actual properties. Consult the applicable specification for minimum properties. Use good engineering judgment. Communicate with your foundry early in the process.
- St. Paul Brass and Aluminum Foundry is providing this information on metal characteristics for informational purposes only. Before making a final decision on alloy selection consider the following and all other appropriate design and specification principles. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.
- Consult the appropriate specification from an accredited specifying body (ASTM, SAE, Federal or Military) to determine current minimum values of this alloy.
- Use appropriate design safety factors.
- Use Failure Modes and Effects Analysis to help identify possible weaknesses in designs and specifications.
- Use computerized stress analysis tools.
- Defect free is a relative concept in castings. Commercial grade castings will have a certain amount of imperfections in them. The closer to perfection you require the higher the price you will pay to achieve and document the specified quality level. Determine the level of acceptable defects for your design. Use appropriate certification requirements for your casting suppliers. These may include test bars, chemical certifications, radiography, dye penetrant or other non-destructive testing methods.
- Test your design to failure in a controlled environment. Then test it to failure in a simulation of its end use.
- You and you alone are responsible for the suitability of your design and the materials that you select.
